Born in New York on September 26, 1898, George Jacob Gershwin was an American composer, pianist and conductor. Considered the initiator of the American musical, his work ranges from classical music to jazz. He was also recognized as one of the most famous music artists during the First World War.

Gershwin's compositions spanned the blues and classical music genres, and his most popular melodies are widely known. Among his best known works are the compositions Rhapsody in Blue (1924) and An American in Paris (1928), as well as the opera Porgy and Bess (1935).
